The Hindu Kush, the ancient kingdom of Chitral, and the Kalash Valleys.
This is not a highlights tour; it is a genuine immersion. Pakistan's Chitral district sits where the Hindu Kush pushes toward the sky — a region that has been a kingdom, a trade crossroads, and a cultural island for three thousand years. The Kalash people who live in its side valleys are unlike any other community in the country: non-Muslim, polytheistic, speaking their own language, dressing in their own colors, and celebrating festivals that have no parallel in the subcontinent. We have spent years building the private access, local relationships, and logistical knowledge to show this region to international visitors the way it deserves to be seen — unhurried, unshared, and unforgettable. Eight days. One dedicated guide, one private vehicle, full board throughout, and a sequence of moments that no group tour can replicate.
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport. Your private guide and driver meet you for a seamless transfer to your 5-star city hotel. Settle in over a welcome dinner as your trip director introduces the Kalash people — their history, culture, and the Hindu Kush landscape you will be moving through over the coming seven days. Overnight Islamabad.
Drive northwest on the Swat Expressway into the valley once known as the Switzerland of Pakistan. En route, stop at Butkara Stupa — a Buddhist site dating to the 2nd century BCE — a quiet reminder that this landscape has hosted civilizations far older than either of us. Arrive Mingora by afternoon, check into your 4-star hotel on the river. Evening walk along the Swat riverbank. Full board. Overnight Swat.
Third Domain Exclusive
A private riverside dinner arranged on the Swat riverbank, away from the hotel dining room — the valley sounds carrying across the water after dark.
An early departure north through Dir, entering the Lowari Tunnel — 10.4 km of mountain passage that connects the rest of Pakistan to Chitral year-round. Emerge into the Chitral Valley and follow the river upstream into town. Check into your 4-star hotel on the Chitral riverside. Evening walk through the bazaar — Chitrali woolen caps, hand-embroidered shawls, fresh trout from the river. Full board. Overnight Chitral.
A full day in and above Chitral. Morning visit to the Shahi Qila — Chitral Fort — seat of the Mehtar of Chitral for centuries, and the adjacent Shahi Mosque. Continue to Chitral Gol National Park, habitat of the Markhor, Pakistan's national animal, and a sanctuary of ibex and wolves against a backdrop of Tirich Mir at 7,708 metres. In the afternoon, drive up the mountain road to the Birmoglasht plateau — an open highland meadow at around 3,000 metres with a panoramic view across the entire Chitral Valley and the surrounding peaks. Lunch served at Birmoglasht. Full board. Overnight Chitral.
Third Domain Exclusive
A reserved slot inside Chitral Gol with a wildlife ranger — access to inner park zones not included on standard day visits, with the best chance of a Markhor sighting in the early morning hours.
Drive south through Ayun Valley and transfer to private 4x4 jeeps for the track into Bumburet, the largest of the Kalash Valleys. Check into the best available lodge in the valley. Spend the afternoon walking the valley floor — wooden-balconied houses, walnut orchards, the sound of the Bumburet stream, and the distinctive black-robed women with their heavy bead-and-cowrie headdresses. Visit the Kalasha Dur Museum, the only cultural museum in the valleys. Full board. Overnight Bumburet Valley.
Third Domain Exclusive
A private cultural evening arranged with a Kalash family — walnut bread, dried mulberries, and conversation through your guide as interpreter, in a home rather than a guesthouse common room.
A full day crossing into the quieter valleys. Drive the jeep track over to Rumbur — less visited than Bumburet, more traditionally intact, with smaller villages and fewer outside faces. Walk the length of the valley floor and visit the shrine of Mahandeo, a sacred site central to Kalash religious practice. Cross back and continue to Birir, the smallest and most isolated of the three valleys and the one where Kalash cultural practices are considered by researchers to be best preserved. Return to Bumburet by evening. Full board. Overnight Bumburet Valley.
A final morning at leisure in the Kalash Valleys — one last walk, a final cup of tea with your hosts. Drive back through Ayun to Chitral, then continue 45 km northwest to Garam Chashma — a village at the end of a dramatic gorge road where natural hot springs emerge directly from the mountain rock at 45°C. Soak in the mineral pools with the Hindu Kush walls rising on all sides. Return to Chitral for a farewell dinner by the river. Full board. Overnight Chitral.
Third Domain Exclusive
A private pool reservation at Garam Chashma outside the public bathing window — the gorge entirely to yourselves in the late afternoon light.
Morning flight from Chitral Airport to Islamabad. Your private transfer connects you onward to Islamabad International Airport for your international departure, or to your Islamabad hotel if continuing in Pakistan. Your Third Domain concierge remains available for 48 hours post-departure for any onward travel assistance. Note: a road return via the Lowari Tunnel (approximately 8 hours) is available as a no-cost alternative if the flight is weather-cancelled — the drive through Dir and the Swat Valley is a worthy journey in its own right.

Before You Travel to Chitral & the Kalash Valleys
What is the best time to visit Chitral and the Kalash Valleys?
May through October offers the best weather and full road access via the Lowari Tunnel. May is particularly special if you time the tour around Chilam Joshi — the Kalash spring festival, when the valleys come alive with dancing, drumming and ritual. September and October bring harvest-season colors and the Uchal festival in Bumburet and Rumbur. Festival departures require at least 3 months advance booking.
How do we get to Chitral from Islamabad?
We drive from Islamabad through Swat and Dir, entering Chitral via the Lowari Tunnel — a 10.4km mountain tunnel that keeps the route open year-round. On departure, we book a domestic flight from Chitral Airport back to Islamabad. A road return via the Lowari Tunnel is held as a no-cost backup if the flight is weather-cancelled, and the return drive through Dir and Swat is a journey worth taking in its own right.
Is this tour suitable for non-hikers?
Yes. The tour is graded easy to moderate. Most days involve driving with short walks on good paths. The Kalash Valleys involve flat valley-floor walks. The Birmoglasht plateau is reached by vehicle with a short gentle walk. Garam Chashma is entirely accessible by road. No trekking fitness is required, and we adjust pace to suit your group.
Is Chitral and the Kalash Valley safe for international tourists?
Yes. Chitral and the Kalash Valleys are well-established tourist destinations with a long international visitor history and a genuinely welcoming local population. Third Domain Travel handles all foreigner registration requirements throughout the tour and maintains live local intelligence and contacts across the region.
Can this tour be timed around a Kalash festival?
Yes, and we recommend it. The three major festivals are Chilam Joshi (spring, 2nd week of May), Uchal (harvest, August, in Bumburet and Rumbur), and Choimusun (winter solstice, December). The Shandur Polo Festival in July is also a compelling add-on if time allows. Festival departures carry a premium on valley accommodation; book at least 3 months in advance for May and August dates.
